Chapter 12

Back at the office, Charlie made a call to Pizzeria di Giovanni. The pizza was going to take about thirty minutes, so they had plenty of time to take Duke for a walk down to the beach and back while they waited for the pizza to arrive.

“So what was that?” Charlie asked. He’d been holding the question in as long as he could.

“What was what?” Stella asked.

“At the Broccolini house,” he said, “you talked, kind of a lot. And you didn’t have a breakdown after it. What’s the difference?”

“I don’t know,” she said. They walked in silence for a while before she followed up with, “People aren’t just one thing.”

“What does that mean?” he asked. “People aren’t just one thing?”

“I don’t know,” she said. “What about you? You started throwing around accusations. Does that mean you believe that Uncle Beau was murdered?”

Charlie told her he believed she believed it, and they returned to the detective agency just in time to meet the pizza delivery driver in the parking lot. Stella just wanted a cheese pizza and Charlie wanted everything on his, so he had to order two. It was the first time he’d ever ordered two pizzas at the same time. He didn’t know if that was supposed to make a difference on the tip, but to be safe, he gave the guy twice the tip he normally would.

It was also the first time Stella had been in the office. He cleared the papers and electronics equipment out of the way so she would have a small space to eat at the conference table.

“Where is your boss really?” She picked up a pen and clicked it over and over.

“I have no idea,” he said. “Why? Do you think he was murdered too?”

“Do you?” She scribbled on a piece of paper, but nothing happened. “This pen doesn’t work.”

“Because it’s not a pen,” he said. “It’s a secret listening device. When you click, it starts recording audio. Click again to stop. Et cetera. It’s not a toy.”

She threw the pen on the table, and then repeated her question. “Do you think your boss was murdered?”

“I have no idea,” he said. “He just didn’t show up one day. He’s talked about having to go to other cities for cases. Maybe somebody he was shadowing left town and he had to keep on their trail.”

“For months?”

“I don’t know,” Charlie said. “If I were a detective, I could probably find him.”

“Maybe he doesn’t want to be found,” Stella said.

“Maybe not.”

“His car and his dog are still here,” Stella said. “And you’re still here. Why are you still here?”

“I have to get three years of experience under a licensed private investigator before I can get...” he started, but Stella shushed him.

“What?” he asked.

“Do you hear that?” Stella asked.

“Hear what?” Charlie didn’t hear anything. He moved closer to her. It was a beeping sound, but like an underwater radar beeping sound.

“Are you tracking a submarine?” she asked, and kept talking while he searched for the source of the sound.
